Get Out Of Town

Smokey Robinson

Smokey Robinson always takes me back to my childhood. Short drives with my mom, Motown in the tape deck, and smooth grooves on demand as she shuffled around running errands with me in tow.

Smokey’s Family Robinson is not Motown. It’s funky and psychedelic, with hints of Parliament, generous helpings of synth, soulful horns, and a 70s sound that feels more like Curtis Mayfield than the Miracles (especially on Do Like I Do).

Reminds me a bit of the leap that the Temptations took with Psychedelic Shack. In the 70s, a lot of established artists were taking big shots to stay relevant.

One song per day. Two hundred words or less.
