Everyone has airplane albums. Downloaded and saved to your phone years ago, never to be deleted. At least not on purpose. (Subscriptions lapse, artists and record labels pull songs from your favorite streaming service, some things are out of your control). These albums aren’t always our favorites, they’re often not obvious, but they are meant to evoke some type of feeling, like getting you through the slog of a commute or long flight. They can amp you up, calm you down, or fade completely into the background.

One of mine is Diamond Eyes by the Deftones. It’s calmer than their early work, a lot more shoegazy than Nu Metal. It reminds me of being on the coast, outside in the sun, not stuck in a metal tube hurtling through the sky. It puts me at ease.

One song per day. Two hundred words or less.
