Umi Says

Umi Says is one of my favorite Mos Def songs. A perfect track from a perfect first solo album. It’s hard to believe that the original is 25+ years old.

I first heard this cut on KMHD’s Headnod show. Soul Supreme’s version is the perfect Sunday morning, brewing your first cup of coffee, maybe driving out to the coast kind of vibe.

Jazz and hip hop are so tightly coupled. Borrowing from and influencing one another. These covers–if you’d call them covers–just feel right.
