One summer I spent my entire commute on the Long Island Railroad listening to Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 best albums of all time. One of the early favorites from that exercise was Steely Dan’s Aja. It’s one of the most acclaimed albums of all time for a reason - brilliant songwriting, incredible musicianship, an audiophile’s dream. Allegedly this album is so well recorded that it’s still to the day used as one of the premiere pieces to test out new sound systems.
The entire album is worth a listen - for hip hop fans you’ll find a lot of recognizable samples all over this one - most notably Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz’ Uptown Baby which Donald Fagen and Walter Becker own all of the publishing for and are credited as the sole writers of.
But the closing track Josie is one of the unsung heroes of the album. That fender Rhodes, much like when Josie comes home, so good
