Heather's Leather

Lawne

We started this blog because we missed music recommendations from actual people — not an algorithm. Personally, I wanted to provide anyone who reads this blog with the same feeling I get when I walk by the window of a record shop and an amazing album cover catches my eye. The fact that it’s in the window usually means that someone liked it enough to put it there. And that’s usually enough for me to give it a listen.

Tris and I were walking through Kreuzberg when we saw the cover to the latest Lawne album. Its wavy typography, colors, and misregistration reminded me a lot of Riso printed concert posters, where mistakes aren’t really mistakes, but a feature of the medium. I marked it down, curious if the music matched the art. (I’m a sucker for good art and liner notes).

The closest thing that comes to mind is Melbourne’s Surprise Chef. There’s smooth buildup and strong jazzy grooves. You’re never quite sure when a song is going to end. Tracks bleed from one to another. There aren’t many sharp edges.

Heather’s Leather was what did it for me on first listen, so that’s what I’m sharing today.

Maybe this is what gets you to play the whole album. Maybe it’s not your thing. Either way you saw this and took a chance. And if that’s the case, I think we’re doing what we set out to do.

One song per day. Two hundred words or less.
