Textures
Herbie Hancock
The music playing in your Uber is probably the same playlist you hear at Walgreens or some unlistenable EDM mix reminiscent of an Atlantic City nightclub. That’s why I was caught off guard when I first heard the synth bassline of Herbie Hancock’s “Textures” as I got into my Uber ride to Oakland.
I told my driver Dorian it reminded me of the intro to Long Hot Summer by The Style Council even though it’s a totally different genre. He hadn’t heard it and queued it up right away. He started nodding along and told me he liked it. Then he pivoted back to jazz fusion and threw on some Weather Report.
I kept it going with Shigeru Suzuki.
I’m pretty sure he took the long way because somewhere between Potrero Hill and Temescal, we had a full-on listening session with both of us trading gems. Needless to say, five stars.
