I Want You to Shake
Francis and the Lights
Until yesterday, I had never heard of Francis and the Lights. By chance, the latest episode of Track Star* with Anderson .Paak autoplayed after the E-40 Tiny Desk, and about halfway through the episode Friends (feat. Bon Iver) came on. I immediately queued up the album.
“Farewell, Starlite!” isn’t easy to categorize–it doesn’t fit neatly into one genre. It lives somewhere on the spectrum between Phil Collins, Prince, and James Blake. It’s got synth heavy production, punchy drums, and a lot of crooning. It feels big, like a lot of the music did in the 1980s.
“I Want You to Shake” caught my ear as one of the more uptempo tracks on the album. It’s the kind of song that you throw on during a road trip, windows down, as the sun dips below the horizon.
